Take Interstate 10 to Virginia Street.  Get off at Virginia Street exit. Take a left on Virginia Street. Go under the interstate. On your right you will see the Mobile County Maintenance Department. Just past the MCMD you will see Council School.

About the School

Council Traditional School offers children in grades K-5 strong academic instruction within a highly structured environment. Special emphasis is placed on the development of communication skills, and higher order thinking skills through the use of the Talents Unlimited model, global studies, and Spanish classes.      


Council Traditional School is a school of choice. Council Traditional School’s program is designed to provide unique program offerings that will attract students voluntarily and meet a variety of needs. There are no special education classes offered at Council Traditional School.

 

How do I know if Council Traditional School is right for my child?

Students who are most suited for Council’s program are those students who, achieve at or above grade level; are well disciplined; have good work and study habits; complete homework assignments regularly; respect authority, themselves, and others; desire a challenging academic program; and have parents who support Council’s philosophy, dress code, and code of conduct.

What is the philosophy of Council Traditional School?

It is the school’s responsibility to teach academic curriculum and skills that educate students for responsible citizenship. It is the parent’s responsibility to support the school’s philosophy and goals, and to teach children to respect school authority and behave properly at school.

What is the purpose of the Magnet School Program?

The two purposes for the development of the Magnet School Program in Mobile County are: 1) to increase educational choice, variety, and quality, and 2) to promote desegregation through voluntary means.

How are students selected for Council Traditional School?

Students must complete an application process prior to admission to Council Traditional School. Placement will be based on random selection by computer. Applications are available from Council and from the central office at Barton Academy. The formal application period for all magnet schools is the month of February. Prospective students and parents are urged to call or visit Council Traditional School for further information and assistance with the application process.

 

The theme of Council Traditional School is traditional education with an emphasis on communication. Council offers a unique enhancement to reading for its kindergarten through third grade students. An art specialist teaches the children how to communicate through art. Students learn how to relate what they have read through the different modes, mediums and textures used in art.

Council Traditional School offers a program that both the parent and the student have selected. Both the parent and the student sign a commitment to the school’s philosophy, dress code, and code of conduct. Parents cooperate with teachers and principals to help students follow the Council philosophy. Council’s teaching staff have been carefully selected from applicants whose unique skills are suited to the school’s philosophy. Students will be expected to achieve at or above grade level.

 

Extended Day Program

An extended day program is offered at Council Traditional School. A variety of activities is provided both before and after school, with students being supervised from 6:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. All students receive an hour of academics with a certified teacher, and may also choose from activities such as: taekwondo, keyboarding, and dance. These activities are directed and supervised by a qualified and professional staff.

Spanish Classes

Learning to utilize foreign language is important in our world of global communications. Council Traditional School places emphasis on Spanish, which is taught by a specialist. The objectives of our program include: integrating foreign language into the regular elementary curriculum, developing listening and speaking skills, reinforcement of basic skills in Spanish; promotion of cultural awareness and cross-cultural understanding; to identify the importance of being bilingual and develop an acceptance of different cultures.
